1+1=2, we get it! But 1+1=3? That bothers some filmmakers, they are unable to see things beyond the obvious and superficial.
Storytelling is manipulation of truth, bent, and wound up through the grinds of the filmmakers mind. A story is part truth, and part perspective, and as a filmmaker you need to develop an engaging perspective about life, or else your stories will feel flat. It is much like eating a chocolate chip cookie, you see it, you pick it up, you already have an idea what it tastes like, so you bite into it,”Yup”, you say to yourself, “that’s a what I expected, a chocolatey, cookie taste.” And there you have it, 1+1=2.
If you want to create a premium chocolate chip cookie, that people will talk about for years on end, you have to add your own ingredients, like a some chunks of heath bar, some fancy chocolate chips, or some exotic nuts. Your personal ingredients need to be infused into those cookies. And while on the surface, it may appear to be nothing more than a normal chocolate chip cookie, when people taste it, it will become a memorable experience, the experience you intended, one worth talking about…So go ahead, make 1+1 equal 3.
Don’t be cookie cutter, be a cookie innovator.
