What is it you want? What do you strive for every day? What are your hopes and dreams? A good character will have well-defined “hopes and dreams” that drive him into action. Story is then made up of the actions the character takes in order to obtain these hopes and dreams.
It’s natural for people to want things. It’s an emotion that is universal, and connects people to each other. Whether you are writing a script, prepping a scene, or tightening a final edit, consider what your character’s hopes and dreams are. Focus on those, and your character will be more truthful to your audience.
Kudos go out to Tom Jenkins, from The Theory for giving a small desk toy some well defined hopes and dreams. His creative approach is very well executed, and the result is mesmerizing.
