This short film, by Luke Neumann, is what has me most excited about Magic Lantern’s new 2.3 software release. The ability to shoot HDR video that can actually semi mimic the dynamic range of film. This is a huge feat for independent filmmakers working with lower-end DSLR video cameras that are limited in their luminance and color range.
Not only does magic lantern’s HDR feature make for a more pleasant image, but it allows you as a filmmaker more creative options in telling a compelling story. You are no longer limited to exposing for the interior or exterior alone, but you can stage your narrative using both environments, giving you a larger palette and stage.
I’ll be installing it on my Canon 60D an will report on the install process, and my overall impressions.
You can download Magic Lantern right now for a small paypal donation. If you are a patient and cheap soul, you can wait to download it for FREE on August 13, 2012.
